A Look Behind the Scenes: Baymeadows Movers Joins Forces with Chipman and OMA to Take Out Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most customers walk into a movie theater thinking about the movie they're about to see. They see the giant screen, plush seats, and maybe the smell of freshly popped popcorn. What they don't see is all the work happening behind the scenes to deliver that experience—or what it takes when it's time to retire decades of hardware and make way for the future.
Recently, Baymeadows Movers had the opportunity to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a one-of-a-kind commercial moving project through our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we supported the removal of outdated projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It was not your standard commercial move. It required careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between reliable relocation partners.
Projects like these are part of why we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever quite the same, and that's what makes our work engaging.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
One of the finest elements of commercial moving is the variety.
One week we're moving an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're moving physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Then we are inside a movie theater, carefully taking apart and hauling out equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was particularly memorable because it entailed removing large digital cinema projection systems, as well as several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like stepping back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection was established as the standard in the industry.
For film lovers, it was fascinating.
For our crew, it was a reflection that every piece of equipment we move carries its own history.
Great Projects Begin with Careful Planning
Moves like this don't begin when the moving truck arrives.
Long before the first projector is unplugged, our team works through logistics, scheduling, access points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Collaborating with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we managed every phase of the project to ensure each theater could be completed efficiently and safely. One of the greatest advantages of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is access to a nationwide network of experienced commercial movers who share the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By combining Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to complete the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Movie theaters weren't designed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection rooms are often tucked away on upper levels with narrow hallways, snug doorways, and restricted access. A few sites have elevators, while others don't. Moving large projection systems through those spaces requires much more than simply rolling them onto a dolly and making for the truck.
Each challenge must be identified before any work begins.
That's when experience makes the difference.
It's All About More Than Muscle
People often assume moving heavy equipment is just about raw strength.
The reality is that commercial moving hinges on preparation and planning, technique, and using the right tools for the job.
Jobs like the AMC equipment removal require specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and skilled crews who know how to safely navigate oversized equipment through tight spaces.
Each projector had to be meticulously disconnected, protected, guided through the building, and securely loaded for transport.
A lot of these systems are not only heavy—they're also highly delicate. One accidental bump into a doorway or uneven transition can lead to significant damage.
Patience and communication are as important as physical strength.
Safeguarding the Building Is Just as Important
While our focus is on carefully moving equipment, we're equally focused on protecting the customer's facility.
Commercial properties represent a major investment, and even small repairs can prove disruptive and expensive.
Once a move is complete, our goal is for customers to remember how smoothly everything went, not the moving process itself.
Teamwork Makes the Difference
Big commercial moving projects are never a one-person job.
Each member of the crew has a role, and communication is key from start to finish.
One mover may be steering equipment through a doorway while another controls the load. Someone else is tracking clearances, while another team member is preparing the next piece for transport.
When veteran crews work as a team, there is a rhythm that develops. That's expertise that can't be developed overnight.
Seeing our team work together was a great example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same dedication to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during demanding commercial projects, it's important to appreciate the experience.
Working inside movie theaters definitely had its perks.
Our crew couldn't resist slipping downstairs for some movie snacks between jobs on the project. After spending the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn somehow tasted even better.
Those moments make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also enjoy what we do.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Transportation
Most people believe moving companies simply load trucks and unload them at another location.
Commercial moving is so much more than that.
Projects often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating several contractors.
Every customer has different needs.
Some businesses need to relocate hundreds of employees over a single weekend.
Others need sensitive medical equipment relocated without disruption.
Some projects take place overnight to minimize downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—involve carefully removing specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every job demands flexibility, preparation, and problem solving.
Here at Baymeadows Movers, when a customer asks, "Can you help with this?" our first instinct is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Real Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has proudly supported Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've come to understand that great projects consistently come down to the same fundamentals:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll arrive prepared, keep them informed throughout the project, respect their property, and solve problems instead of creating them.
Whether we're on the job inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach remains the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Complete the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Protecting a Part of Movie History
One of the unexpected highlights of this project was seeing some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought so many movies to life.
Long before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines produced lasting experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Working alongside them gave our crew a true appreciation for how much technology has advanced over the years.
It's not every morning that a moving company has the chance to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Speaking for us, it was a moment we will never forget.
